The online community of the internet trend seekers
Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett really want you to get into the Christmas spirit. About a week ago, the Gorillaz’ website set up an advent calendar where, as usual, you can discover a new gift every day: behind-the-scene videos, little animated games, moulds for making masks with the group members’ faces until Christmas.

Since launching their calendar, the duo has set the 25th as the date for the launch of a special gift, much more substance. And that gift, hidden behind the last door on your calendar, will be a new album.

That album, recorded on an iPAD, which Albarn has referred to as "basically a diary of our tour in disc form”, can be downloaded free on Christmas Day.

On New Year’s Eve, this advent calendar will bring us the video that Hewlett has made for one of the songs which will be on that album, which, incidentally, could be the Gorillaz’ last. At least that's what some have wanted to read into recent statements by Albarn and Hewlett to the Sydney Morning Herald. You can read that interview here.

If you're thinking about what to give people for Christmas and don’t want to say it with flowers, rather with images, one option is to explore online forums and get the lucky one a Super 8 camera.

But if apart from nostalgic, our recipient is a sucker for design, colours and everything that smacks of the twenty-first century, you can opt for one of those charming LOMO cameras, which has been delighting all those addicted to its little buttons and fish eye effect for many years now; or go for an iPhone or perhaps a heavier weight (metaphorically and not literally) and get your hands on a Harinezumi.

This camera is an updated, fully digital, version of a movie camera, which includes both video recording and still image options. Its promoters in Spain, nice camera, have gone to all lengths to get it out there: using social networks, where fans share and comment on their experiences with it, uploading videos and screenshot images generated by this new device that allows us to create instant memories, and even performing in collaboration with filmmakers and artists such as Isabel Coixet and Charlotte Gainsbourg at Barcelona’s Arts Santa Monica.

As with LOMO, the project has reached global dimensions, and has thus attracted an international community. Previously, the national advance party participated in an exhibition to record a different kind of Christmas. Let’s see what the coming months will bring. ¿Shall I shoot?

... In less than a month, a decade ends. To kick off 2011, let’s move into to January with a proposal, which doesn’t just support a good cause, but a vital one. We’d like to talk about green, sustainable design, in the hope of offering some pointers and asking your help, because if this isn’t done on the web, it’s simply not done at all.

In fact, perhaps the first requirement for responsible design is precisely a teamwork ethic, the awareness of every one of us as a designer. Only then can we incorporate environmental factors into product design, including the entire design production process: from the project itself, to the choice of paper, ink, packaging, binding, etc. Customers, printers, publishers, brands ... we are all involved.

In addition to Green Graphic Design, the renowned book/manual by Brian Dougherty (a partner of Celery Design Collaborative), two websites deserve special attention: "Lovely as a tree" and "Design Can Change." The first stands out for the comprehensive information it provides (ranging from case studies to a section that dismantles myths such as "recycled paper is of poor quality and more expensive than virgin paper), as well as for those searching for green printing and paper, focusing, however, only on the UK. It is certainly a good example of a project to follow. The second, with a more activist tone, is noteworthy because it contains a database of green designers and studios around the world: from Hong Kong to Barcelona, via Cape Verde and Lebanon.

However, there are sure to be lots of other interesting sites, all deserving a mention. This is where we ask for your cooperation. The more we know, the greener we can be. And mutation is vital.

Do you typically collect business cards that you never enter into your address book? Do you ever make missed calls to contacts you have just typed into your phone's contact list to send them your phone number?

As the name of this mobile app indicates, Bump is here to make those contact info exchanges as simple and playful as bumping your mobile phone against your colleague's or friend's.

Bump allows you to define profiles for different situations, like a personal and a professional profile, define the data you'd like to share as well as the social networks you'd like to connect with this person on. For the moment, Bump only supports Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook, but since it has an open API, connection on other social networks, services or even money could be bumped between users soon.

The data that you can bump to your new contacts or get from them doesn't only include contact information, but also photographs, calendar invites and calendar sharing. Music, ringtones or other type of files that may be subject to copyright issues are not supported by Bump. If you are wary about the security of the application, the company claims that transfer of information is secure and it uses the same type of encryption as online banking.

Bump is a free app that currently has versions for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android devices, with support for more platforms to come soon. Any two devices connected to the internet and running Bump can bump each other, so that means that an iPhone and a Droid could exchange data, for example.

Bump will only work with people in your proximity, so it won't let you push content to a user who is not by your side, but once you have made the connection, you'll be able to chat with this person and share files via chat.

Although they’re not shouting it from the rooftops, guifi.net is an internet provider just like any other, but with some differences.

Firstly, this company is not only concerned with earning maximum profits but is also a user group that’s aims to uphold the quality and freedom of telecommunications. Secondly, unlike conventional operators, where access is based on one central node, guifi.net is a network whose distribution works according to a self-service model, with each enlisted user also becoming the access supplier to other users. The whole infrastructure is open so that anyone can see how it works, evaluate and create new sections as needed. Thirdly, unlike large companies who are determined to control what flows through internet, guifi.net guarantee web neutrality, i.e. the users' freedom to consume, create and share whatever content they like. Do you remember Telefonica’s CEO saying that "the network is ours"? Well, here it’s the opposite: guifi.net is a network created by users, for users.

Guifi.net started off in 2004, has received several innovation awards, both Spanish and international, and currently has over 11,000 active nodes and 14,000 miles of network connections, especially in inner-Catalonia. Although these figures are small compared to large companies, guifi.net is growing step by step and its impact is measured primarily in qualitative terms. For example, if we talk about the digital divide and regional balance, given that its largest deployment is in rural areas, precisely where large companies have no interest in going. Or economic sustainability because, as well as providing cheaper broadband access, guifi.net creates jobs in places where it operates (antenna installers, electronic stores, etc.).. Or long-term competitiveness, because it also provides access to fibre-optic cable, something that larger companies are doing very slowly.

Now, they’re starting to implement the strategy in other parts of the Iberian Peninsula. If you’re interested in becoming one of the pioneering nodes, you can contact them via their website which, befitting of a project of this nature, is a wiki: austere, efficient and participatory.

What will the shopping mall of the future be like? The creators of Nuji, a new social shopping platform, have a possible answer, which involves learning from recent phenomena such as the power of collective purchasing, a personalized service for people with similar tastes and the use of codes to connect objects to the virtual world.

The Nuji concept involves bringing similar tastes together in order to provide a fitting range of selected items to a generation of increasingly demanding customers, by means of a utility that allows users to share and recommend products found either on the web or in traditional shops.

Nuji was founded by Dean Fankhauser, Vincent Thome and Meryl Nithianandan Anton in February this year, in order to overcome their frustration when it comes to finding products they really like. They strongly believe that social recommendations will always beat computer-enhanced algorithms.

Recently presented in Paris at the annual Le Web'10, one of the most important events when it comes to innovation and trends on the web, Nuji is emerging as a powerful tool for finding products through people with similar tastes in music, fashion, gadgets and films, amongst other things, reinventing the way we look at the shopping mall.

Tapas with our mates
by Maria Ripoll, 14 diciembre 2010
We’re bored stiff, stuck in our car and our thoughts turn to twitter or to the irritating sound of a fly. Fed up, we turn on some music and realize how little we understand the song in English. If the traffic doesn’t ease, we take photos of the disgust-ridden faces of the other drivers or video the guy we caught blowing his nose... Have we turned into machines that need to register everything? The funny thing is, we like to "record" the thoughts of others during moments of boredom, not to mention in compromising situations!

The latest invention of our times, geolocation, has started to make things easier. The more restrained of you can now see what others think. Sounds like a far-fetched science fiction dream, doesn’t it? Ah, but not only can you geolocate boredom, but also your tastes, your purchases, your friends ... and the tapas you like to eat. And in a country where the question "Where’ll we go for tapas?" is on everyone's lips, wikitapas is a vital tool.

Wikitapas puts it like this: "Wouldn’t you like to know where to eat tapas in your own neighborhood, or show your friends around the world your favourite tapas? Personalize your account on Wikitapas and you’ll have that and lots more! ". And I say: You really don’t know if there are good tapas in your neighborhood? Are you dying to send a photo of some tapas to your friends? What I am convinced about, however, is how happy the bars must be about this new invention.

And I'm still wondering: Will tourists stop going to the tourist tapas bars? What will the patatas bravas at Tomás, probably the best in Barcelona, look like in a snapshot? How many people have to recommend tapas before you go and try them?

Like everything on the Internet, wikitapas may make sense if its users give it one. In December the beta version is being launched. Will you give it a chance?

At this stage the word "Arduino" will mean something to more than one of you. To those who don’t know, it’s a revolutionary electronics prototyping board with a couple of unique features: it’s designed for and by artists and its specification is free, being provided open source. In just five years, this has made it the tool used by thousands of developers around the world and has led to spin-offs that would have been difficult to imagine not long ago.

American Michael Krumpus, basing his work on the Arduino board’s simple extendable architecture and the work of other programmers, quickly developed a fun, yet intelligent, project earlier this year: HACKVISION, the DIY console.

Employing the user-friendliness of the original platform, as well as its highly original and extensive documentation on the Internet, Krumpus sells pre-assembled or ready-to-assemble kits for these little game tools on his own webpage.

In the midst of the current craze within the computer world for all things primitive, which some like to call "retro", hackvision allows us to get closer, not only to the development of the programme, but the assembly of the very hardware that runs it. A simple device that has no cause to envy the very best machines of thirty years ago. A romantic and didactic experience in equal parts, which is certainly worth more than it costs.

An informal conversation between Richard Hamilton, VicenteTodolí and Ferran Adrià inspired the idea to present Adria’s contribution to documenta in a book. FOOD FOR THOUGHT examines the creative processes behind the extraordinary gastronomic-artistic project. It not only describes the experience, but also questions the very limits and limitlessness of creativity, language, art and different means of expression. FOOD FOR THOUGHT compiles the testimonies of the artists, critics and gallery owners who sat down daily at a special “documenta table” at elBulli over the course of the documenta exhibition. It became an open forum between twelve prominent personalities from the worlds of art and cuisine who attempted to open the frontiers between cooking and art. The book also features an abundant selection of theoretical writings on the “philosophy” of elBulli and Ferran Adrià. FOOD FOR THOUGHT is edited by Richard Hamilton and Vicente Todolí, including book’s the original concept and overseeing all contents. Graphic design is by Fernando Gutiérrez and editorial coordination by Cristina Giménez. FOOD FOR THOUGHT’s cover features an illustration of Ferran Adria by Matt Groening, famed cartoonist of The Simpsons. The producer of The Simpsons series, James L. Brooks was so enraptured by his experience eating at elBulli that he asked Matt Groening to make a caricature of Ferran Adria as a special gift. And so the iconic caricature on the cover of FOOD FOR THOUGHT was born.

The proposition rounds about the loss, hallucination, fantasy and the inert body between the space dead/alive. A piece where the loneliness of the characters will be always present. The individuality as a state. The identity as lost. The communication as a way out. From the work of plastic artist Noé Sendas and his hyper realistic sculptures, a story of fiction is created, told through the image of the body in movement and also the static body. A work that starts in the gesture and the body in a certain mental state. Bodies present but not between us anymore, live together in the gap that exists between the dead and the living. A search between five characters with two interpreters.

Ada - Intelligent Space: An artificial creature for the Swiss Expo.02.Neuchatel (Switzerland) Ada is an entertainment exhibit that is able to interact with many people simultaneously, using a language of light and sound. “A visit to Ada takes us inside a strange, clever and lively but nonetheless artificial being named after Ada Lovelace, a pioneer in the history of information technology. Like Robotics, this exhibition is also about artificial intelligence. However, it differs from Robotics in that it is not geared to presenting machines that resemble human beings. Ada works rather like the human nervous system. She tries to make contact with her visitors, to recognize them and distinguish between them. She wants her guests to play with her – using light, sound and movement. All the resulting activities and relationships are utterly spontaneous. Ada is always ready to adapt to new situations, and she never stops learning. And a light-hearted side of science that is seldom displayed is very much in evidence at this exhibition.” http://ada.ini.ethz.ch/ http://www.expo-archive.ch

Rekord your fucking name. Live Session.

We are time poor. We work longer and play harder. Global connectivity has given us more choices and more ways to spend our time than ever before. We take the home into the office and the office home. A service that allows busy people like you to outsource, delegate, or simply get rid of EVERYTHING getting in the way of more important things in life. From booking restaurants to holidays, sourcing cars to financial products, delivering alcohol to clothes we personally do all the things you haven’t got time for. Sincura will keep you abreast of your calendar, managing your appointments and upcoming events in and around London. We don’t stop there - as well as letting you know about the latest events, we are a portal for getting you in there - be it the hippest parties, new launches, sold out concerts or exclusive events. Our regular newsletters ensure you'll never be out of the picture again. Sincura have forged strong relationships with a growing number of London establishments who are willing to offer our members VIP services and discounts, which we pass directly to our members. Show your cards in affiliated shops for instant discounts; get room upgrades in hotels, preferential treatments at clubs, cashless taxi services, sold-out tickets and much more. We work personally and proactively for you. On a day-to-day basis, the way it works is simple: if you need something - anything - ask. We're here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and have a highly skilled team who will go out of their way to ensure your request is met in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
