The online community of the internet trend seekers
Aufgang, the triangular line-up of rhythm and keyboards orchestrated by Francesco Tristano, Rami Khalifé, and Aymeric Westrich (recent protagonists in our interview section, in case you’d like to investigate...), want to re-imagine their music, and this time with your help.

InFiné and Discograph have joined forces with Fairtilizer, the French magazine Tsugi, English blog Death Electro, and with the sacred recording label (PlayGround) to invite you to participate in a remix competition whose aim is to invent new readings of "Dulceria", one of the tracks that will be part of "Air On Fire", a forthcoming EP from the trio.

The mechanics are this simple:
1. Download the parts of "Dulceria" here
2. Do whatever you like with those parts.
3. Upload your remix to Fairtilizer.com identifying it as Dulcería [your name] Remix, and add "Aufgang remix contest" in the tag list.

The members of Aufgang themselves will be responsible for judging the remixes and choosing the ten they consider best. The remix that wins first prize in this remix contest will be included in the next official EP from the trio, and its creator will receive a limited edition t-shirt, as well as access to a Pro account with Fairtilizer. Those responsible for the remixes that are selected as the ten best will receive the complete Aufgang discography.

The deadline for uploading your remix to Fairtilizer is August 30th. So hurry, take part and... good luck!

WE ROBOTS
by Raquel Herrera , 13 July 2010
A whole lifetime has passed since a malevolent computer took on an astronaut (on the verge of losing its mind) in 2001: A space odyssey, since R2D2 tried out its linguistic skills without any luck in Star Wars, or since Schwarzenneger became a "good" android trying to save humanity in the Terminator saga.

Given the proliferation of examples, it shouldn’t surprise us that robotics is becoming more and more a part of our everyday life, and what’s more, the art world.

In the animal kingdom, some recent examples are the France Cadet dog, or Fernando Orellana’s robotic hamsters, for which, as is the case with humans, the key to success is their ability to emulate the behaviour of real creatures.

In the kingdom of the inert, outstanding examples include the chair that puts itself together from Max Dean, Raffaelo D' Andrea and Matt Donovan, that belongs to a trend of self-assembly (or the opposite), which we already saw in Spain with the Self-disassembling robot by Roc Parés.

Some of the items referred to in this article were seen at the recent Sonarmática, which also included the contribution of young researchers from the local university environment. However, also in Barcelona, one must recall the long history of robotic diffusion at the Art Future festival, as well as the Jornades de Robótica.

Well, for anyone who isn’t so enthused by such aesthetically pleasing results and would like to see machines really sweat, like La Fura dels Baus and Marcel.lí Antúnez made them, the least glamorous project would probably be a Robodock-type affair. Welcome the scrap.

The intimate relationship between design and the business world makes the former a tool for communicating commercial values. It’s hard to find graphic design studios that devote their work to carrying out projects based on social critique and commitment because, as reported in El País on 24/07/2008: "If a graphic designer has deep social worries, can he transmit them through his work? Obviously not, unless he wants to lose all his projects". However, that same report already singled out some names, like the Madrid studio Un mundo feliz, which had just published an anthology of activist design work, Pictopía.

In fact, now that we’re just a few months from the end of the first decade of the 21st century, now that the world has become smaller and we (almost) all work online, now that there are still a surplus of problems that should be denounced urgently, now that we know that pretence is true and the truth pretence, now that we are finally surfing in the age of image… now more than ever one should support activist design.

The Migrants project, which came about thanks to the social phenomenon of globalization and mobility, is a clear example of how design can be an agent of social change. Its pictograms articulate and show us the experiences of immigrant women in cities, through images created from drawings produced by the migrants themselves in a workshop. When these pictograms become part of an urban action and occupy the space normally occupied by advertisements, the force of the message is duplicated. They’ve already done this in Berlin, Cologne, Hamburg, Seville, Buenos Aires… and the result has always been highly effective.

But there are other examples, and what we’d like to do here is to use this post as a point of diffusion, not just to confirm that it’s possible to change the world a little through design, but that it’s possible to do committed activist design.  It’s your turn.

Whether you like Flash or not, it's a technology that defines a lot of of our web experience: rich media applications, games, animations, video and audio content players, are built with Flash.

With the evolution of smartphones, browsing the web on a mobile device has become more and more a standard, but up until now, most mobile users had to download a Flash Lite plug in to load sites, apps or players built with that Adobe Technology.

Things are about to change since Adobe recently announced the release of Flash Player 10.1, redesigned with new performance and mobile specific features that will bring the full web experience across desktops and devices.

These release is not free of polemics, due to the recent refusal of Apple to support Flash in popular products like the iPhone and the iPad. Steve Jobs recently argued that the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards, and they are all areas where Flash falls short. Coincidentally, high performance and low power consumption are two improvements of the Flash Player 10.1. Additionally, Apple wants developers to take advantage of iPhone's features and not make them all look on all mobile platforms.

This decision will force developers to use HTML 5 to load videos, or create animations, for example, instead of Adobe's proprietary plug-in, if they want their content to load correctly on iPhones.

Opposite to Apple's stand, Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian and Palm will include the the Flash Player 10.1 on their products, so that users can choose whether they want to enable that content on their devices or not.

The ability to load Flash content will then be one of the differenciating factors between the brand new iPhone 4.0 and the announced update of Android's OS: Froyo, to be fully released soon.

We'll have to wait and see how these battle of giants unfolds.

I don’t know how to say that human journalism is different without sounding shallow, a consequence of the bad reputation the mass media has earned for itself these days. Human journalism is simply journalism and has many facets.

First of all, it’s professional, or in other words, carried out by people who are aware of the responsibility of their position and act consequently, because they know that the quality of communication is an indicator of democratic health. Secondly, it’s independent, which means that the criteria used to select the news is based on its informative importance and not the laws of the market or the economic interests of certain business lobbies. Thirdly, it doesn’t have any profit motive, which means that its aim is not to compete for the consumer’s attention but to provide high-quality information for its user community. Fourth -and this is patently obvious- it’s journalistic because one of it’s objectives is to deepen our knowledge of what’s happening in the world, in a neighbourhood or in a village and to do so with affection, dignity and without turning it into a show. Human journalism is everything that the mass media isn’t to those of us who can access it normally and the most encouraging digital initiative than has come about in the state media panorama in recent times.

One example: the recent victory of Juan Manuel Santos in Colombia. We already know how this news is covered in the traditional media: throughout the first days, a series of articles appear which feature a varying degree of description, and which confuse more than they inform; a couple of editorials appear in the weekend supplement; some emotive report with images of paramilitary fighters and cocaine dealers on TV; and what’s more, the Colombian situation is very depressing, the hands of Uribe are very long and the reader or spectator’s time is scarce.
Human Journalism treats the question with a completely different focus, through a series of documentary videos "Deciphering Colombia" which, shown one per day, examine without fear the extremely complicated situation in this Latin-American country, with testimonies, analysis and transparency.

Besides audiovisual pieces (another highly recommendable one is "Iraq, postguerra" by the prestigious Albero Arce), and quality articles on themes that don’t usually appear in the media or only do so in a superficial way, Human Journalism also includes podcasts (like "Radioactivos" by the cultural research collective Zemos98 or “¿Quieres hacer el favor de leer esto, por favor?” by the journalists Elena Cabrera and Carolina León) and links to the contents of other media (like the chapter "50 years of... women, a men’s thing" made by Isabel Coixet for Spanish television). You can follow them on their web, on facebook or on twitter, and use their contents provided that you respect the Creative Commons license by which they’re governed and support the initiative by becoming a member or via a donation. If you’re interested in the world you live in, if you think that information shouldn’t be just a business or you simply want to be reliably informed, there they are.
They are a highly-motivated, exciting and committed team and they deserve a community of followers to match.

One of the most important fashion streets in Japan is invisible to Google Maps since it doesn’t exist in the real world. Visited by more than 2 million people per month and with over 160 stores stocking the most in-demand brands by the highly demanding Japanese fashionistas, who are tired of shops like those found in the Ginza district in Tokyo. We welcome you to Main Street, Zozotown.

In Zozotown each store has a visually unique space, where an exquisite selection of garments, accessories and must-have objects from cutting-edge brands are sold, all selected by the company’s team of trend spotters. Featuring simple navigation and full of imagination and creativity, this inspiring virtual store has established itself as a reference for the future of e-commerce in the field of fashion.

Zozotown is part of Start Today Co. Ltd. the digital empire founded by Yusaku Maezawa, an authentic e-commerce visionary, who at 34 years of age has managed to create a successful company valued at over 620 million Euro, quoted on the stock exchange since 2007, with over 250 employees and a 18,800-square-meter cellar, the setting of some highly-impressive logistics designed to move more than 50,000 articles from stores like United Arrows, A Bathing Ape and Dover Street Market between cyberspace and the real world.

MICROBLOGGING. Be brief (but be)
by PTQK, 16 February 2010
Although its first signs of life go back to 2005 (and five years are an eternity in digital time), microblogging has reached a critical mass in recent times, taking on so many different forms that it’s difficult to speak of a tool or a specific genre.

The most popular microblogging service is Tumblr, which with just a couple of clicks allows us to post anything interesting that we stumble upon on the web (videos, links, images) or simply upload our own personal impressions and gather them all together on our personal page. Its use is very similar to that of del.cio.us (the system of online favourites that lets you store all your links, organize them using tags, share them with friends and access them from any computer that’s connected to Internet) but the result is more attractive and (dare we say it?) much more 2.0.

Other applications that are similar to Tumblr are Jaiku or Plurk but both have an added dimension that make them something rather different: they provide the opportunity to create a community of friends, just like on a social network, diluting the differences between traditional blogging, even if only in brief format, and the latest generation of social media. The king of microblogging is obviously Twitter, not forgetting the status update system used by Facebook. In both cases the logic is similar: to publish any type of content in brief format and initiate something similar to a conversation.

The most interesting thing about microblogging is that it completely shatters the limits of the blogosphere as we knew it, dissolving it in a meta-narrative tide of links, comments, thumbs up and down, twits and re-twits which palpitate with a collective tide of online hyperactivity which, it seems clear, has arrived to stay.

El País starts its own social network for sharing news, stated Genbeta in resounding fashion following its launch. And to follow up, they asked the big question... can Eskup  forge a niche? They singled out Menéame as the main competitor, "but as always we users will have the final word," they concluded.

I believe that Eskup is a long way from achieving these goals and capturing fans of information by giving them a "prestige" role, which will lead to their becoming loyal readers and potential buyers of information or paid services. But I must add that I think it’s a good bet, although at the moment it shows a hint of inbreeding.

And it seems good because I think it would necessitate the survival of mainstream media but not via paid content, rather through services that satisfy new or old demand. Not so much in providing information, free currency on the Internet, nor for its critical role, which blogs and digital media have been doing much better for a long time, rather perhaps social observatory, international reflection, rating professional ethics?

In a new era of citizen’s journalism and blogosphere as the Fifth Power, the historic structure and power of El País should help safeguard informative values through training and ongoing discussions with the new players. And for itself, its own network should open it to new sources, to questions about collective preparation of information, open endings so that the reader can draw his own conclusions, information as a starting point for personal research provided by links, etc ... In summary, we’ll learn to polish the journalist we have inside.

DeUgarte rightly stated: "My first question is whether it isn’t a little too large for El País, I see the model as interconnecting different media rather than devoted to one alone. What do you think?

RARA RACER
by Javier Noguerol, 20 July 2010
First of all visit this page, download the game you’ll find there, run it and take five minutes for yourself.

Have you finished yet? Rara Racer is the kind of thing that’s sure to make its mark on you. Not just because of its decontextualized interface, which imitates a computer full of cheap porn. Nor for its game system, which impedes the game itself. Not even because the game lasts barely three minutes.

Rara Racer grabs my attention because it brings a touch of brilliantly absurd humour to a market that all we know is addicted to the action/drama/fiction combo. Yes, that formula directly inherited from the more vigorexic, amateurish cinema. And don’t misunderstand me: I love this kind of cinema and those games. And I understand that anyone who consumes interplanetary fiction in a book will also look for it at the controls. But we can’t help but applaud an idea, however small it may be, that comes from that paradigm and is applied directly to one of the least acknowledged areas in the world of contemporary games: humour.

The videogame is another of those products in the entertainment industry that started off and began to grow, without any complexes, exploring humour as an essential narrative component. We all remember the games from the SCUMM platform, Larry the politically incorrect saga or the macho comments of Duke Nukem.

Well, despite the obvious interdependency between humour and entertainment, laughter in games is still an underexploited goldmine. And that’s why although some praiseworthy examples are still being released within the genre, new projects like those by Stephen Lavelle are extremely attractive. Lavelle, one of the most prolific independent designers of the present day, very well-known for games like Judith (developed along with Terry Cavanagh), had already programmed a year ago, without any great pretensions, something that reminds us what the player of today is crying out for: more sense of humour please.

An informal conversation between Richard Hamilton, VicenteTodolí and Ferran Adrià inspired the idea to present Adria’s contribution to documenta in a book. FOOD FOR THOUGHT examines the creative processes behind the extraordinary gastronomic-artistic project. It not only describes the experience, but also questions the very limits and limitlessness of creativity, language, art and different means of expression. FOOD FOR THOUGHT compiles the testimonies of the artists, critics and gallery owners who sat down daily at a special “documenta table” at elBulli over the course of the documenta exhibition. It became an open forum between twelve prominent personalities from the worlds of art and cuisine who attempted to open the frontiers between cooking and art. The book also features an abundant selection of theoretical writings on the “philosophy” of elBulli and Ferran Adrià. FOOD FOR THOUGHT is edited by Richard Hamilton and Vicente Todolí, including book’s the original concept and overseeing all contents. Graphic design is by Fernando Gutiérrez and editorial coordination by Cristina Giménez. FOOD FOR THOUGHT’s cover features an illustration of Ferran Adria by Matt Groening, famed cartoonist of The Simpsons. The producer of The Simpsons series, James L. Brooks was so enraptured by his experience eating at elBulli that he asked Matt Groening to make a caricature of Ferran Adria as a special gift. And so the iconic caricature on the cover of FOOD FOR THOUGHT was born.

The proposition rounds about the loss, hallucination, fantasy and the inert body between the space dead/alive. A piece where the loneliness of the characters will be always present. The individuality as a state. The identity as lost. The communication as a way out. From the work of plastic artist Noé Sendas and his hyper realistic sculptures, a story of fiction is created, told through the image of the body in movement and also the static body. A work that starts in the gesture and the body in a certain mental state. Bodies present but not between us anymore, live together in the gap that exists between the dead and the living. A search between five characters with two interpreters.

Ada - Intelligent Space: An artificial creature for the Swiss Expo.02.Neuchatel (Switzerland) Ada is an entertainment exhibit that is able to interact with many people simultaneously, using a language of light and sound. “A visit to Ada takes us inside a strange, clever and lively but nonetheless artificial being named after Ada Lovelace, a pioneer in the history of information technology. Like Robotics, this exhibition is also about artificial intelligence. However, it differs from Robotics in that it is not geared to presenting machines that resemble human beings. Ada works rather like the human nervous system. She tries to make contact with her visitors, to recognize them and distinguish between them. She wants her guests to play with her – using light, sound and movement. All the resulting activities and relationships are utterly spontaneous. Ada is always ready to adapt to new situations, and she never stops learning. And a light-hearted side of science that is seldom displayed is very much in evidence at this exhibition.” http://ada.ini.ethz.ch/ http://www.expo-archive.ch

Rekord your fucking name. Live Session.

We are time poor. We work longer and play harder. Global connectivity has given us more choices and more ways to spend our time than ever before. We take the home into the office and the office home. We struggle to organise our work life, let alone juggle our personal, social and home lives. Sincura have set up a service that creates time. A service that allows busy people like you to outsource, delegate, or simply get rid of EVERYTHING getting in the way of more important things in life. From booking restaurants to holidays, sourcing cars to financial products, delivering alcohol to clothes we personally do all the things you haven’t got time for. Sincura will keep you abreast of your calendar, managing your appointments and upcoming events in and around London. We don’t stop there - as well as letting you know about the latest events, we are a portal for getting you in there - be it the hippest parties, new launches, sold out concerts or exclusive events. Our regular newsletters ensure you'll never be out of the picture again. Sincura have forged strong relationships with a growing number of London establishments who are willing to offer our members VIP services and discounts, which we pass directly to our members. Show your cards in affiliated shops for instant discounts; get room upgrades in hotels, preferential treatments at clubs, cashless taxi services, sold-out tickets and much more. We work personally and proactively for you. On a day-to-day basis, the way it works is simple: if you need something - anything - ask. We're here for you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and have a highly skilled team who will go out of their way to ensure your request is met in a timely and cost-efficient manner.
