Someone who reinvents collective memory; bringing a new context, another dimension, a fresh perspective will never cease to be of interest – someone who suggests an imaginary universe, hidden from first glance, discovered bit by bit, before our eager contemplation.
April Gertler has worked in photography, collage and illustration since 1994, exploring various media and almost always combining them all in the same piece, dealing with aspects of daily life; details she sees and hears – moments she retains and reinterprets.
In addition to working as a visual artist, in 2009 April founded Picture Berlin, a cross between a residency and art academy, a project based on fostering and supporting contemporary photography.
The work she exhibits here, forms part of a project called Damp Patches, whose originality leads us to question what is going on with those juxtapositions, and reorientations of landscapes, lines, diagonals, photos and drawings. What is this new world April is constructing and where is it, if it exists beyond her imagination?
